DESCRIPTION:DARRELL SCOTT: \nMulti-Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment\, taking the rote\, menial\, mundane\, and allowing it to be surreal\, ever poignant\, and candidly honest\, lilting\, blooming\, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world\, what is at stake here\, and our place in it. And ultimately\, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters\, that we don’t always get it right\, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things\, why we forever chase it\, and why it is held sacred. \nDarrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4\, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there\, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University\, along with playing his way through life. This would never change. \nAfter recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each)\, and producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and being named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI\, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river\, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music. SUMMARY:Thank you\, Jack - a tribute to Jack Stauffacher
DESCRIPTION:A self-taught printer\, book designer\, and craftsman\, Jack Stauffacher has fostered a lifelong fascination with the craft of printing. He was only 16 years old when he established the Greenwood Press in 1936 in a small building behind his family’s house in San Mateo\, California\, and he had published a number of volumes by his late twenties. \nIn 1955 Stauffacher won a Fulbright grant to study for three years in Florence\, Italy. There he met Giovanni Mardersteig and Alberto Tallone\, who inspired Stauffacher’s deep interest in historic printing techniques and their relationship to place. He returned to the United States to teach at the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving back to California to become typographic director at Stanford University Press. \nSince the 1960s Stauffacher has been experimenting with repetitive inking techniques\, all the while exploring the ways in which the mind\, hand\, type\, ink\, and paper come together. These explorations allow him to leave behind the rigidity and precision of traditional typography and embrace the medium’s potential for randomness and spontaneity. \nA local printer\, Holly Downing\, and myself have put together this tribute event. She worked with Jack on a book called ARCH\, and actually brought him by NBLA many years ago. So it seemed not only relevant but necessary to honor his life and legacy. For the first hour we will have friends and colleagues share stories and memories of Jack. Again\, this isn’t enough time to even scrape the surface\, but it’s a start. In the second hour\, we will have live printing on the press\, done in the spirit of Jack’s Saturday explorative works. We are inviting guests to pick a single character and build impromptu formes to play with and explore… and see what happens. For those more interested to continue sharing stories and chatting amongst themselves\, this is also encouraged. \nThis is free for NBLA members\, for NON members we are accepting sliding scale donations at the event\, $25 being the recommended amount. \nRSVP online \nWe will have light food and drinks to keep everyone in good spirits.

Light refreshments provided.\nhttps://OpeningReceptionCharlesBeck.eventbrite.com \nExhibit Overview: Esteemed artist\, Charles Beck\, is featuring his large-scale paintings of Sonoma County’s coastal and inland areas in this new art exhibit “Sonoma County Landscape” on display at the Laguna Environmental Center\, September 9 – December 22\, 2023. \nArtist Statement: These paintings come from many hikes and long bike rides through the valleys\, coastal hills and cliff edges of Sonoma County. Although “places” are recognizable in some of them\, they are not a portrait of an area but more a collective vision and experience from my wanderings. As I paint\, many shapes and colors change over a long period of working on a canvas in the studio. Eventually\, but not always\, the painting elements coalesce into a good geometry and composition\, while the light and dark and the color all come together to make a good painting. If not\, despite countless hours spent on a canvas\, it all gets painted a solid white and I start again. \nAbout the Artist: Charles Beck is a longtime resident of Occidental and welcomes visitors to his home studio during Art at the Source\, Sonoma County Art Trails\, and by appointment. Beck has exhibited his artwork in galleries and museums across the state and the country. In 2005\, twenty of his large paintings were exhibited at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Systems in Palo Alto.
