DESCRIPTION:Railroad historian and former Northwestern Pacific and Southern Pacific officer Fred Codoni will discuss the history of the railroad in Sonoma County\, from the early horse-drawn streetcars – ‘horse car lines’ – to the formation of the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad (P&SR) that went through Sebastopol. The current West County Museum in downtown Sebastopol was the terminal. Fred Codoni’s collection of over 14\,000 railroad images across this history represents a powerful and unique set of artifacts that bring to life an amazing century of change across transportation\, manufacturing\, and rural life. He has worked for the railroad industry since 1956\, and is the last surviving member of the Northwest Pacific Railroad. As a member of the Western Railway Museum\, Fred often ran P&SR passenger car No. 63 at the Western Railway museum at Rio Vista junction\, the only remaining operating car from that railroad. \nThis talk is a project from the Western Sonoma County Historical Society. It will be preceded by a short update by the society board about what is happening at the Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe: Ned Kahn and the Texture of Emptiness
DESCRIPTION:Ned Kahn\, a Sebastopol-based environmental artist\, will show videos of his early works at the Exploratorium and some recent projects and discuss how his kinetic artworks relate to recent discoveries about the Higgs Field and the nature of empty space. He will also show a video of his recently installed sculpture along the Laguna in Sebastopol. Ned Kahn’s work with Frank Oppenheimer\, the founder of the Exploratorium and younger brother of J Robert Oppenheimer\, inspired him to develop artworks intended to reveal the underlying physics of many natural phenomena. Two recurring themes in his work are how energy waves flow through fields and how vibration often requires a restoring force.

DESCRIPTION:Did you ever wonder about who lived here before you? Come join the community as Docent volunteer Laura Shafer shares her knowledge of the Pomo Indians — some of the original people of Sonoma County. How did they survive? Did they thrive? What did they eat? Did they grow crops? What were their homes made of? Did they interact with the other local tribes? What happened when Europeans and Russians arrived? Where are they now? Learn about the Pomo Indians on the evening of Monday January 27th at a free talk. Light desserts and beverages will be provided. The talk will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday January 27th\, at the Epworthian Hall in the United Methodist Church\, 500 North Main Street\, Sebastopol. This is a project by the Western Sonoma County Historical Society.

Free. \nThis month’s speaker at St. Stephen’s monthly “Talking with your mouth full” dinner and speaker series is Rabbi Irwin Keller\, the spiritual leader of Congregation Ner Shalom in Cotati. In this heated and polarized political time\, it has become so hard to talk to people with differing political views\, including family members and loved ones. In this conversation\, Rabbi Irwin will bring some traditional Jewish texts that may be helpful in finding ways to remain in relationship with people who are important to us and with whom we disagree.
