How could all the various marching armies and fleets of ships from many directions all converge at just the right time to decisively defeat the British Empire at the 1781 Battle of Yorktown? The role of finance and trade in the success of the American War of Independence has been underestimated and misunderstood by many scholars and historians. The ten members of the committee of secret correspondence used their wealth\, knowledge of trade and finance\, espionage and intrigue\, diplomacy and worldwide relationships to provide Washington’s Colonial Army with gun powder\, flower\, rum and supplies. SUMMARY:Painting Produce - 6 Week Watercolor Course
DESCRIPTION:In this 6 week course\, participants will learn a unique approach to watercolor\, intended to alleviate the frustration that many experience when learning this beautiful yet challenging medium. The class will focus on strengthening one’s observational skills\, giving the artist a foundation off of which to build their paintings in a step by step layering process\, that trains the artist to see value and color \nOur unifying subject will be seasonal produce – fruits\, veggies and herbs. These subjects are great for beginners and experienced watercolor painters alike; their organic shapes make them forgiving drawing subjects\, but their beauty can be a muse for life. \nThis class will work from life\, practicing basic drawing skills in addition to watercolor technique. With six class sessions\, participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills and build muscle memory with a medium that often feels like it has a mind of its own.

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe # 560 Fire Cameras\, AI and Satellites - Unblinking Eye: Early Wildfire Detection Sonoma County's Experiment: Artificial Intelligence & Fire Response  Samuel Wallis\, Deputy Director Sonoma County Emergency Management
DESCRIPTION:Wildfire safety relies heavily on detecting fires early to both extinguish them before they grow unmanageable\, as well as to alert and evacuate communities as early as possible if immediate suppression becomes impossible. Following 2017\, Sonoma built up a network of fire detection cameras. Starting in 2021\, Sonoma became the first County in the country to experiment with artificial intelligence to detect wildfires early on. This two-year pilot program revealed a lot about the capability and limitations of the technology. Sam will talk about what has been done historically in wildfire detection and describe the developing camera network\, how the AI system was implemented and its effectiveness. He will also mention other systems and technologies used for early fire detection and confirmation. \nSamuel “Sam” Wallis is the Deputy Director for the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management since March 2023. He has also served the County as Community Alert & Warning Manager for four years and Emergency Coordinator for five years.
