SUMMARY:SBC # 578 Debra Giusti\, Entrepreneur & Speaker - Healing Cancer: An Integrative Path to Recovery & Prevention
DESCRIPTION:A Personal Journey – After a recommendation for a double mastectomy (Stage 0 left\nbreast and Stage 1 in right)\, Debra chose to investigate her options and developed a\ncomprehensive integrative approach to significant recovery. She has experienced 100%\nhealing in the left breast and 65%-70% in the right. \nDebra will talk about what she has learned about the root causes of cancer and factors\nthat may influence cancer development and recovery. The potential of integrative\napproaches and the practical strategies she incorporated into her own healing program\ninclude nutrition\, fasting\, detoxification\, supplementation\, lifestyle changes\, and supportive\ntherapies. Using evidence as well as her own experience\, Debra will identify and\ndistinguish between established research\, emerging evidence\, and her own personal\nexperience. \nThe presentation offers an informative and hopeful look at what we know\, what we are\nstill learning\, and how people can become more actively engaged in their own health.\nDebra is a pioneering spiritual entrepreneur\, speaker\, event producer\, and founder of the\nnationally recognized Harmony Festival. For over 48 years\, she has created platforms\nsupporting personal growth\, conscious community\, healing\, and transformation\, reaching\nan audience of more than 150\,000 through Wishing Well Promotions. \nDebra is now creating the “Cancer Recovery & Prevention Guide\,” an easy-to-use\nresource designed to help people facing a cancer diagnosis understand their options and\nexplore what may support their healing.

SUMMARY:Jewish Film Festival: The Last Twins
DESCRIPTION:The Last Twins is the never-before-told story of an unsung hero of the Holocaust\, Erno “Zvi” Spiegel\, who risked everything to save dozens of young twins from almost certain death at Auschwitz. Under the shadow of Dr. Josef Mengele’s horrific experiments\, Spiegel used his courage\, compassion\, and ingenuity to shield the most vulnerable—the sets of twins targeted for brutal medical experimentation. Mengele put Spiegel in charge of the young boys\, but Spiegel used his position to protect and comfort the children\, all of whom had been torn from their families and subjected to inhumane tests under the constant threat of extermination. \nThrough first-hand testimony and exclusive archival material\, The Last Twins brings to life the voices of those who survived because of Spiegel’s defiance. It is a testament to resilience\, sacrifice\, and the power of one person to make a difference\, even in humanity’s darkest hour. \nThe documentary is directed and produced by Emmy Award-winning directors Perri Peltz and Matthew O’Neill and is narrated by Tony Award-winning actor Liev Schreiber.

SUMMARY:The Art of Paste Paper
DESCRIPTION:Paste paper is one of the oldest decorated papers used by bookbinders\, and can be found in books that are centuries old. Hundreds of years ago (a tradition that continues today)\, bookbinders would sometimes use up their leftover bookbinding paste by adding pigment to the mixture and brushing it out on surfaces to make decorative papers used in bookbinding. They would make strokes or stipple patterns with a brush in the paste\, or use tools to draw or comb designs in the paper and then let it dry. \nOne of the distinctive qualities of paste paper is the rich 3-dimensional patterns and designs. This is achieved because when the paste is first applied to the paper and a pattern is made\, the paste is thick with peaks and valleys. As the paper dries\, the paste is sucked flat into the paper\, leaving a 3-dimensional pattern on a 2-dimensional surface. \nDuring this workshop students will learn about the history of paste paper. Together we will look at different samples and use different kinds of paste and tools to create decorative paper. This fun class focuses on color blending\, textures\, and graphic design on paper for artistic use in a variety of book arts or collage-focused art projects. Anything but ordinary\, this is a hands-on class where participants will create beautiful custom decorative papers by applying colored starch paste to paper and manipulating it with tools to create patterns. Students will learn different recipes for making paste\, how to create tools for mark making\, and each individual will take home a full suite of papers made in this single session. \nThis special workshop welcomes beginners\, and artists of all levels. The instructor will offer guided instruction in a supportive learning environment with a limited class size. The class materials fee will include paper and all the tools needed to create each of these projects. \nPlease note that since the papers need to dry before they can be safely taken home\, students should arrange a time for later pick-up from our studio.

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe # 579 The Neurology of Aging: Beyond the Brain! Dr. Allan L. Bernstein\, Neurologist
DESCRIPTION:The latest research on the neurology of aging beyond the brain where peripheral and autonomic systems may act as key drivers of decline. \nAll this in ‘Plain English! Just Ask the Doc! \nRecent studies show neuromuscular junction (NMJ) failure contributes to sarcopenia: age-related loss of the sodium channel NaV1.4 impairs nerve-to-muscle signal transmission\, correlating with weakness. This is potentially reversible—ClC-1 chloride channel inhibition restored muscle responsiveness and strength in aged models. A 2025 theory posits sympathetic-parasympathetic imbalance (excess “fight-or-flight\,” reduced “rest-and-repair”) as a core driver of aging hallmarks like inflammation\, mitochondrial dysfunction\, and senescence\, with vagus nerve stimulation proposed as a countermeasure. \nPeripheral nerves also age via reduced fiber/glial density\, senescent Schwann cells that hinder regeneration\, and inflammaging. Some Alzheimer’s-related motor issues may even originate at the NMJ independently of the brain. These findings shift focus toward targeting peripheral neural interfaces for healthier aging. \nDr. Allan L. Bernstein is a longtime California neurologist (MD\, SUNY Syracuse\, Board-certified 1969) with over 55 years of practice\, primarily in Sonoma County. Allan spent decades with Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa (including as chief of neurology)\, served as a clinical professor of neurology at UC Davis for 26 years\, and was president of the Santa Rosa medical staff for 12 years. He pioneered the Headache Clinic and Memory Disorder Program there\, consulted at the VA Hospital in Martinez\, and has conducted extensive clinical research and trials on headache\, dementia/Alzheimer’s\, stroke\, epilepsy\, movement disorders\, pain\, and nutrition. \nDr. Berstein was a recipient of the 2006 Morris F. Collen Research Award for bridging research and clinical care and is an international lecturer on brain health.
