SUMMARY:College Planning Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The Sebastopol Grange is launching a College Access Program (CAP)\, which offers free college planning workshops and individualized counseling scholarships to West Sonoma County high school students. The focus is on first-generation college applicants and lower-income families. \nNearly every major university system\, including UC and CSU\, and nationally recognized private universities like Harvard\, Yale\, the University of Chicago\, now offers substantial financial aid to lower-income families. This aid often includes not simply tuition but room and board and living expenses. For many local students\, tuition is no longer the barrier. Skilled guidance through the college preparation and application process is. The CAP program exists to close that gap. \nCOLLEGE PLANNING WORKSHOPS: Two free college planning workshops will be held at the Sebastopol Grange Hall\, conducted by a professional college counselor with decades of experience in college admissions and student counseling. The first workshop\, on August 27 from 6:30-8:00pm\, will focus on an overview of college admissions today\, financial aid opportunities\, and advice on how to build a strong CV and college application. The second workshop\, on September 16\, also from 6:30-8:00pm\, will focus on applications to the University of California and the requirements for UC eligibility. Both workshops are open to all West Sonoma County students and their families. Grange membership is not required. \nCOLLEGE COUNSELING SCHOLARSHIPS: Two two-year counseling scholarships will be awarded to students selected from workshop participants. Each scholarship provides 20-30 hours of individualized one-on-one guidance — from sophomore year through college application filing. SUMMARY:History Talk: Cnopius Field - Sebastopol's First Airfield (1925-1942)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that in 1925\, Sebastopol had its own nationally recognized airfield? Learn about this piece of unique history at a free talk at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts on Sunday\, August 30th. The airfield was the first in Sonoma County\, long before the Charles M. Schultz-Sonoma County Airport. It played a major role in the barnstorming era of the 1910s-1930s and was a lively hub for early aviation events\, stunt flying\, and community gatherings. Gary Greenough will share the colorful and fascinating history of when Sebastopol was a flying hub. This 1-hour talk is a project from the Western Sonoma County Historical Society. It will be preceded by a short update by the society board about what is happening at the Historical Society\, Luther Burbank Experiment Farm\, and West County Museum. The event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s invitation is to spend some time with two elders\, women who have been walking a Path of the Sacred for many decades: Ginny Matthews within Buddhism and as an elder with “Women of Spirit and Faith\,” and Regina Sara Ryan in both Christian and Hindu spiritual communities. With them\, we’ll consider what the Sacred Feminine is\, along with its relation to and need for the Sacred Masculine\, and how we may encourage these essential aspects of our souls\, for our own benefit and for the healing of a sorely wounded world. \nMyosho Ginny Matthews finds her life’s support in the three pillars of family\, spiritual practice\, and her work as a dancer/ choreographer and teacher. She was a student of Kyozan Joshu Sasaki\, Roshi for forty years\, taking ordination in 2000 and supporting Myoko Ni Sorin\, a women’s practice center\, co-founding Dharma Heart Center\, and leading women’s retreats at various centers in the USA and Canada. Her marriage of over fifty years\, three adult sons\, and four grandchildren provide a rich and deep family life. \nRegina Sara Ryan\, a professional writer and freelance editor\, is the author of numerous books\, including The Woman Awake\, Praying Dangerously\, and Igniting the Inner Life. A former Catholic nun\, Regina has studied contemplation and mysticism from several traditions for over forty years. She currently conducts study groups\, retreats and workshops in the U.S.\, Mexico and Europe. Married for forty-seven years\, Regina was widowed in 2019. She resides as a hearth-keeper at Triveni Ashram\, Paulden\, Arizona.

SUMMARY:Acorn MusEcology Project in concert: The Earth Says
DESCRIPTION:Acorn MusEcology Project (AMP)presents a program of choral and instrumental works that includes the Northern California premiere of “Sacred Place” by contemporary composer Alex Berko. This work offers an immersive exploration of ecological spirituality set to the words of Wendell Berry\, John Muir\, William Stafford\, and Rabindranath Tagore. Acorn’s 27-member vocal ensemble\, directed by Sarah Dupre\, will be joined by violin\, cello\, and piano on this piece\, and on multiple other pieces. The concert includes a variety of other original compositions\, including by Sarah Dupre\, Robin Eschner (AMP co-directors)\, and Moira Smiley. \nConcerts on 9/25 and 9/27 take place at the Occidental Center for the Arts\, 3850 Doris Murphy Court. The 9/26 concert venue is the Faith Lutheran Church\, 4930 Newanga Ave.\, Santa Rosa.
