SUMMARY:A conversation of mythic imagination with Brian R. Martens at Many Rivers Books & Tea
DESCRIPTION:Reading and Reflection\nJoin us as Brian leads a conversation shaped by image\, story\, and transformation. We’ll begin in the dim enclosure of Rainer Maria Rilke’s “The Panther\,” where seeing becomes a kind of reckoning\, and the question of how we break through our own inner cages begins to stir. Brian will follow with a reading of his personal response to Rilke. \nContinuing\, we’ll shift into storytelling with the ancient tale of “The Old Woman and the Black Dog\,” a story that moves like a shadow through memory\, asking each listener: “Where do you stand within it\, and what has it come to teach you?” Between poem and myth\, observation and reflection\, this gathering invites you to listen closely — until something shifts\, and you bring your own voice into the conversation. \nBrian will be available at the conclusion of the event to sign his books “Three Raven Gate” and “Merlin’s Wing.”

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe # 565 The Neanderthals with Mike Price\, Writer for Science Magazine
DESCRIPTION:Mike will share what scientists have learned about our species’ long-lost cousins\, and how that hard-won knowledge is shaping our understanding of human history. He is a science journalist and recent transplant to Sebastopol. He works as a news editor for Science magazine primarily covering human evolution\, anthropology and archeology topics. \nOur species\, Homo sapiens\, is the last human standing\, but it wasn’t always so. A couple hundred thousand years ago\, we shared the planet – and possibly even the same caves – as several other species and subspecies of humans. This includes our close evolutionary cousins\, the Neanderthals. After more than a century of studying Neanderthals\, scientists now know these ancient people were anything\, but the brutish cavemen sometimes depicted in pop culture. They made and used tools and weapons fashioned from stones\, bones and wood. They painted figures and symbols on cave walls and made jewelry. They cared for their elders and buried their dead. The Neanderthals provide a view of ourselves through a looking glass; their rise and fall can help anthropologists understand how our species evolved to spread and thrive around the world. And in a way\, Neanderthals aren’t really extinct. Bits and bobs of their DNA live on in the modern human genome\, the result of interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals long\, long ago.

SUMMARY:SBC # 562 THE ROARING 2020'S - Mary Fricker\, Business Reporter & Author Rising wealth inequality and unstable financial markets: How it works\, how they're connected and what to do. America\, we got this– We can fix our future!
DESCRIPTION:Mary Fricker Co-author “Inside Job-The Looting of America’s Savings and Loans” a NY Times bestselling book published by McGraw Hill 1989. \nAmerica\, we can fix what went wrong. The problem is clear: We’ve become a Land of Un-Equal Opportunity\, where the wealthiest 10% of Americans get half the nation’s income and have two-thirds of the nation’s wealth. We are an eerie image of the Roaring 1920s. Some historians warn we may be approaching a breaking point\, a 1929-style crash with catastrophic losses. That’s because for 50 years both parties in Washington have been deregulating finance\, trying to boost the economy but instead creating an unseen world of money that is out of control. \nNine simple\, nonpartisan fixes that are fair to everyone can get America headed in the right direction again. Both political parties now say that their #1 goal is to help middle Americans. I say\, prove it. It’s time to move beyond the blame game and get busy. \nMary Fricker is an independent business reporter who has retired from The Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat. She freelances and publishes www.repowatch.org\, which tracks the repurchase market (“repos”) and shadow banking earning the Best in Business 2012 award for digital blogs from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. In 2010 she received the McGill Medal for Journalistic Courage from the University of Georgia for her work with the Chauncey Bailey Project in Oakland\, Calif. (www.chaunceybaileyproject.org). \nBRINGING SCIENCE & ECONOMICS BACK INTO CULTURE …\n(707) 292-5281 • daniel@economicbuzzcafe.com • www.sciencebuzzcafe.org\nDiscover the Economist Within and Widen Your Horizon!

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe # 561 with Cheryl Dean\, Molecular Ecologist THE eDNA Technique: Environmental Monitoring for the Klamath River Dam Removal
DESCRIPTION:In 2023-2024\, four dams were removed from the Klamath River restoring access to 400 miles of free-flowing river. Before the dams were demolished\, a team of Molecular Ecologists sampled the system to establish a baseline of DNA so we could monitor population changes in response to restoration actions. Using the Klamath River restoration as a backdrop\, Cheryl will examine the use of molecular ecology as a tool to monitor system-wide habitat change. Cheryl will give a brief history describing how changes to the tools used by geneticists to visualize DNA have allowed us to “see” all species (bacteria\, fungi\, plants\, animals) living within a stream from a water sample. Cheryl will explain water sample collection of environmental DNA – eDNA – and how it enables development of a Molecular Library that categorizes all life using genetic code. The presentation will then explain the Klamath dam removal process and how the Molecular Library is being created to track the return of salmon and changes to other species populations in the Klamath River. \nCheryl Dean is a molecular ecologist and population geneticist with 29 years in the laboratory working on all things DNA. She started her career at UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab\, where she did the initial work demonstrating that genetics could be used for real-time monitoring of endangered winter-run chinook salmon. Currently the lab manager for Cramer Fish Sciences and Genidaqs Laboratory\, Cheryl has worked on fish\, bats\, birds\, bugs\, even smaller “bugs”\, plants and fungi\, and has given up having a favorite species and simply asks\, “is it a Eukaryote or Prokaryote”? Even then\, it doesn’t matter\, she will use DNA to find it.\n“The Purpose of Capital is to Fund the Development and Application of the Talents and Skills of Youth of All Ages!”

SUMMARY:Science Buzz Cafe # 560 Fire Cameras\, AI and Satellites - Unblinking Eye: Early Wildfire Detection Sonoma County's Experiment: Artificial Intelligence & Fire Response Samuel Wallis\, Deputy Director Sonoma County Emergency Management
DESCRIPTION:Wildfire safety relies heavily on detecting fires early to both extinguish them before they grow unmanageable\, as well as to alert and evacuate communities as early as possible if immediate suppression becomes impossible. Following 2017\, Sonoma built up a network of fire detection cameras. Starting in 2021\, Sonoma became the first County in the country to experiment with artificial intelligence to detect wildfires early on. This two-year pilot program revealed a lot about the capability and limitations of the technology. Sam will talk about what has been done historically in wildfire detection and describe the developing camera network\, how the AI system was implemented and its effectiveness. He will also mention other systems and technologies used for early fire detection and confirmation. \nSamuel “Sam” Wallis is the Deputy Director for the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management since March 2023. He has also served the County as Community Alert & Warning Manager for four years and Emergency Coordinator for five years. This included responding to floods\, wildfires and other emergencies and disasters. He also served for 27 years in the US Army in a variety of capacities and holds a BA in English from SSU and a master’s in emergency management from Walden University. Sam currently resides in Sebastopol\, California with his wife and 16-year-old son. \n“The Purpose of Capital is to Fund the Development and Application of the Talents and Skills of Youth of All Ages!”

SUMMARY:SBC # 559 Looking for America: Part 4 The Committee of Secret Correspondence! and other stories ...
DESCRIPTION:From “On Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder\n‘The precedent set by the Founders of America demands that we examine history to understand the deep sources of tyranny\, and to consider the proper responses to it.” \nShare Your Ideas and Concerns in an Open Conversation – after a Short History Lesson!\nLooking for America: Part 4\nThe Committee of Secret Correspondence! \nHow did the colonists have possibly communicated and coordinated the American Revolution for Independence with only horses\, canoes\, and ships – sailing ships\, not steam ships?! How could all the various marching armies and fleets of ships from many directions all converge at just the right time to decisively defeat the British Empire at the 1781 Battle of Yorktown? The role of finance and trade in the success of the American War of Independence has been underestimated and misunderstood by many scholars and historians. The ten members of the committee of secret correspondence used their wealth\, knowledge of trade and finance\, espionage and intrigue\, diplomacy and worldwide relationships to provide Washington’s Colonial Army with gun powder\, flower\, rum and supplies. The fight for independence would have failed without there clandestine efforts. \nLand\, Liberty and Lira\nThe American War of Independence was both a civil war and a worldwide war beginning in 1763 with true independence and sovereignty not won until 1815. Yes\, really! It was formed as if it were meant to be an antidote to the rise of nationalism and tyranny while at the same time championing the emergence of the free individual bound by responsibility to the community one lives in. America’s origins were in the form of a London based share company (The Virginia Company) that settled Jamestown\, Virginia in 1607 where the tobacco trade exploded. The virgin American territory was seen as the largest emerging economic market in history. Was America to be a place for people to be free to take initiative\, to satisfy their own needs as well as the needs of the community where one took initiative? \n“It is a primary American tradition to consider history when our political order seems imperiled. If we worry today that the American experiment is threatened by tyranny\, we can follow the example of the Founding Fathers and contemplate the history of other democracies and republics.” Timothy Snyder\, University of Toronto

SUMMARY:Xenith Handpan: First New Musical Instrument of the Century w/ Colin Folke
DESCRIPTION:Discover the art\, history\, and craftsmanship of the handpan\, a fascinating yet relatively unknown modern musical instrument.\nFor the past 20 years\, Colin Foulke has been at the forefront of the Handpan world\, evolving from an enthusiast to a teacher\, tuner\, and maker. A true pioneer in this young art form\, he isn’t just passionate about Handpans—he’s a scale geek\, designs sound models using math\, and an unapologetic lover of spreadsheets. \nColin has performed on five continents\, appeared on Japanese TV\, exhibited at a TEDx event\, and is a guest lecturer at Sonoma State. But he’s perhaps best known for revolutionizing Handpan-making by open-sourcing his hydroforming production method. A patented inventor\, he recently surpassed the milestone of crafting 1\,000 instruments—each meticulously made in Sonoma County. Colin will introduce the Handpan\, explore its brief yet fascinating history\, delve into the intricacies of its craftsmanship\, and demonstrate the delicate art of tuning—offering a rare glimpse into the magic behind this modern instrument.\nFrom Colin Foulke: “I have dedicated the last seventeen years to playing these instruments and the last twelve years to making them; it’s my calling. It is with deep intention\, passion\, and focus that I bring each instrument to its final form. My goal with every instrument I make is to retain as much control as possible and lead all its facets\, the harmonics\, the port\, and the vessel itself\, to resonate in harmony. The Xenith is the culmination of years of research and development. It represents a massive shift in how these instruments can be made and represents one of my biggest career achievements. The Xenith embodies everything that makes these instruments special; I’d love to make you one.” \nBRINGING SCIENCE\, ECONOMICS & CULTURE BACK INTO CULTURE …\n(707) 292-5281 daniel@economicbuzzcafe.com • www.sciencebuzzcafe.org Discover the Tone Within and Widen Your Horizon!
