SUMMARY:Hand-made Gifts: Create Your Own Heirloom Pendant!
DESCRIPTION:Located in the Painting/Drawing Studio at SebArts\nDo you enjoy creating hand-made gifts for your loved ones? Learn how to work with beautiful vitreous (glass) enamel colors fired on fine silver and set in sterling silver. We will texture (using stamps) and dome fine silver discs. Enamel will be applied to the surface by wet packing the enamels (a mixture of water and enamel powder).\nIt takes several firings to build and blend your colors and 24k gold foil can be incorporated. The enamel jewels will be set in sterling settings with the possible addition of gemstones to create a unique pendant or earrings that will become Heirloom Jewels.\nThe enamel kiln is courtesy of a grant by the Enamellist Society.\nAbout the Instructor:\nAnita Selinger has an art education degree from New York University and a jewelry design degree from Fashion Institute of Technology. For 45 years she has supported herself using modelmaking\, enameling\, and fabrication skills to create one-of-a-kind custom orders and limited-edition jewelry. Teaching for 40 years has been a great pleasure for her as she treasures the enthusiasm of her students as they create. Her workshops include wax modeling and enameling taught in her studio in Santa Rosa\, the Crafts Students League in NYC\, Chimera Arts in Sebastopol\, and the Mendocino Art Center. The September cleanup is our largest of the year and helps remove trash that accumulates over the summer months on the Russian River. This year\, there will be teams across the watershed from Ukiah to Monte Rio all contributing with the shared mission of protecting our River and ocean from trash pollution. With support from Slow Food Russian River\, The Press Fest 2023 will feature garden walks\, docent tours\, demos of apple pressing\, perennial and fruit tree sales\, apple tasting\, and more. The nursery sales will include rare Burbank plants\, and advice for planting trees and perennials in building your productive and beautiful 2024 garden. The apples will be ready to eat\, and the sun will hopefully be shining as we celebrate and help build our green future together. SUMMARY:Thank you\, Jack - a tribute to Jack Stauffacher
DESCRIPTION:A self-taught printer\, book designer\, and craftsman\, Jack Stauffacher has fostered a lifelong fascination with the craft of printing. He was only 16 years old when he established the Greenwood Press in 1936 in a small building behind his family’s house in San Mateo\, California\, and he had published a number of volumes by his late twenties. \nIn 1955 Stauffacher won a Fulbright grant to study for three years in Florence\, Italy. There he met Giovanni Mardersteig and Alberto Tallone\, who inspired Stauffacher’s deep interest in historic printing techniques and their relationship to place. He returned to the United States to teach at the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving back to California to become typographic director at Stanford University Press. \nSince the 1960s Stauffacher has been experimenting with repetitive inking techniques\, all the while exploring the ways in which the mind\, hand\, type\, ink\, and paper come together. These explorations allow him to leave behind the rigidity and precision of traditional typography and embrace the medium’s potential for randomness and spontaneity. \nA local printer\, Holly Downing\, and myself have put together this tribute event. She worked with Jack on a book called ARCH\, and actually brought him by NBLA many years ago. So it seemed not only relevant but necessary to honor his life and legacy. For the first hour we will have friends and colleagues share stories and memories of Jack. Again\, this isn’t enough time to even scrape the surface\, but it’s a start. In the second hour\, we will have live printing on the press\, done in the spirit of Jack’s Saturday explorative works. We are inviting guests to pick a single character and build impromptu formes to play with and explore… and see what happens. For those more interested to continue sharing stories and chatting amongst themselves\, this is also encouraged. \nThis is free for NBLA members\, for NON members we are accepting sliding scale donations at the event\, $25 being the recommended amount. \nRSVP online \nWe will have light food and drinks to keep everyone in good spirits.
