Conditions on the Early Earth and the
Formation of Microbial Life

Looking up at the stars, have you ever wondered where we came from? Perhaps the most profound lesson the science of astrophysics has taught us is the fact that we are all cosmic beings in a very literal sense: the atoms of which we are made are interplanetary, interstellar, intergalactic, and cosmic.

Mary will outline how we’ve arrived at this conclusion, starting with the identification of the elements in chemistry, the characterization of atoms, understanding how the stars shine from nuclear reactions at their cores, how stars die and disperse the atoms they’ve created into the interstellar medium to provide the raw materials for the formation of complex molecules in interstellar space and the formation of the next generation of stars and their planetary systems.
